About the Book

Isvar Chandra Vidyasagar: The Torchbearer of Social Reform

Born in 1820 into a poor Brahmin family, Isvar Chandra Vidyasagar rose to become one of India's most profound intellectuals and reformers of the nineteenth century. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and justice shaped his journey from a bright student to an educator, philosopher, and social activist.

At just twenty-one, he became the principal of Fort William College, later joining Sanskrit College, where he played a key role in modernizing education. But his contributions went far beyond academia—through his writings and activism, he boldly challenged deep-rooted societal evils such as early marriage, polygamy, and the oppression of widows. His unwavering advocacy for widow remarriage remains one of his most significant legacies, earning him a revered place in the Bengal Renaissance.

A scholar, a humanitarian, and a fearless reformer, Vidyasagar’s life is a testament to the power of education and the courage to challenge injustice.
