About the Book

Dilli’s Red Fort: By the Yamuna – A Monument of History & Heritage

This book unravels the majestic saga of the Red Fort, an enduring symbol of India’s past and present. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628–58) and originally called Qila-i-Mubarak (The Fortunate Citadel), its red sandstone walls have witnessed some of the most defining moments in Indian history.

The Mughal Legacy

  • Construction began in April 1639 and was completed in 1648.
  • Additions by Aurangzeb (Moti Masjid, 1659–60), Akbar II (Mussaman Burj Balcony, 1809), and Bahadur Shah Zafar (Moti Mahal, Hira Mahal, Zafar Mahal) enriched the fort.

The 1857 Uprising & British Rule

  • A crucial battleground where Indian mutineers defended the fort fiercely.
  • After the rebellion, the British demolished many structures, replacing them with barracks.
  • The trial of Bahadur Shah Zafar (1857) and the INA soldiers’ trial (1945) were both held within its walls.

 A Symbol of Indian Independence

  • On 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted India’s flag from its ramparts, making it the iconic backdrop for India’s freedom.
  • Declared a World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007, the Red Fort remains a national emblem of sovereignty.

An essential read for history buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone fascinated by India’s struggle for freedom!
