বাংলা ভাষায় প্রথম সনেট লেখার কৃতিত্ব মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্তের৷ কিন্তু তার আগে এদেশে সনেট লিখেছিলেন নব্যবঙ্গের দীক্ষাগুরু হেনরি লুই ভিভিয়ান ডিরোজিও৷ তাঁর দুটি কাব্যগ্রন্থ ‘পোয়েমস্’ (১৮২৭) ও ‘দি ফকির অব জঙ্ঘীরা অ্যান্ড আদার পোয়েমস্’ (১৮২৮)-এ অনেকগুলি সনেটের দেখা মেলে৷ সব মিলিয়ে তেত্রিশ চৌত্রিশটি সনেট তিনি লিখেছিলেন ইংরেজিতে৷ ডিরোজিও স্মরণ সমিতি সেগুলি বাংলায় অনুবাদ করানোর উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করে৷ দেবীপ্রসাদ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় গ্রহণ করেন সম্পাদনার দায়িত্ব৷ দ্বিজেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ডিরোজিওর একটি সনেটের অনুবাদ অনেক আগে করেছিলেন৷ এবারে অন্যান্য সনেটগুলি বাংলায় অনুবাদ করেন বিশিষ্ট কবিরা৷ অনুবাদক কবিরা হলেন শঙ্খ ঘোষ, অলোকরঞ্জন দাশগুপ্ত, আলোক সরকার, রঞ্জিত সিংহ এবং স্বয়ং দেবীপ্রসাদ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়৷ কবিদের
